Are HD TVs supposed to do this!?
I just recently bought a 1080p 42 in. flat screen LG and I got a HD Optimum (Cablevision) cable box and the picture on the tv is centered. Everything I watch is centered on the screen. The sides of the tv are blacked out. And it's the same with the HD channels!! The picture seems like I'm watching tv on a 22 inch... WHY?!
When I play my PS3 and 360, it takes up the whole screen. Why not when I watch television?
Your CableVision box is likely set for use with a 4:3 tv, not 16:9, which would cause the boxing. Try and find a setting in the menu that lets you change it, or a wide/zoom button on the remote.
Alternatively, it may be that your tv is not accepting the signal properly; this can be solved by changing the aspect ratio/zoom function on your set. Usually, there is a button on the remote, and/or a menu on the set.
